What is the difference between an air cleaner (filter), air purifier and air ionizing cleaner ?

Air Cleaner / Filter

A regular air cleaner consists of two components:
1) a fan to circulate the air
2) a filter medium (e.g. hepa filter)
some of them also include a negative ion generator

Air Purifiers

An air purifier is based on Ozone technology
Uses an Ultra Violet Lamp for Ozone generation.
Ozone is a very effective scavenger of substances that are harmful to humans.
Ozone kills Bacteria, Viruses, Mold, Fungus and VOC's.
The main problem with Ozone is that it becomes an irritant for our breathing system at higher doses.
Some Air Purifiers have corrected that problem by converting the Ozone into oxidizers that still attack the impurities in the air, but that are safe to breathe!

Ionizing Cleaners / Filters

Consists of the following components:
A fan to circulate the air.
A device to electronically charge the air particles.
Collector plates that attract the charged dust particles.
Also called electronic air filters, they are often used in a central heating/cooling system.

Negative Ion Generators

The good ones generate massive amounts of negative ions
The negative ions attach themselves to dust particles, which then tend to fall out, resulting in cleaner breathing air.
Negative ion are also claimed to have a positive effect on our mental wellbeing.
There is a lot of scientific data the support that claim.
